The story of the Rua Augusta Arch begins with catastrophe. In 1755, Lisbon was struck by one of the most destructive earthquakes in European history, followed by fire and a tsunami. The disaster leveled much of the city, including its commercial heart along the Tagus River. When reconstruction began under the leadership of the Marquês de Pombal, the vision was not simply to rebuild what had been lost but to create a new, modern capital. The downtown district, known as the Baixa Pombalina, was redesigned with wide avenues, symmetrical grids, and monumental squares. At the end of Rua Augusta, the city’s grand new boulevard, planners imagined an arch that would serve as both a gateway to the Praça do Comércio and a permanent reminder of Lisbon’s rebirth.
